Barbie and The Rockers Tray Puzzle

When the popular Jem doll came out in 1985, naturally Mattel had to make a competing Barbie doll. The result was Barbie and The Rockers.

That’s Barbie, Dana, Diva, Dee Dee, and Derek. Ken was also in the band, but he didn’t join the band until 1987, and this puzzle is from 1986.
I personally had Diva, [...]

Star Wars ABC: F, G, & H

Don’t forget to check out parts 1 and 2 of this series!
Today we have F, G, and H.

Who knew The Force was some kind of weird spinning tub drain? Anyway, please note the following:

Greedo: Scared of a little energy field, pointing his gun at the floor.
Han: Clever, brave, loyal, daring, pointing his gun straight ahead.

Which [...]

Strawberry Shortcake’s Makeover — And Some Activities

Just as I was complaining about character revamps in my earlier post on the Smurfs movie, American Greetings decided to go and give Strawberry Shortcake a new look — AGAIN. In fact, I had her current image (the middle one) in mind while I was thinking about how ridiculous it is that companies feel it [...]

Smurfs Hit The Big Screen

I’ve been posting all original content up till now, but here’s a bit of news I couldn’t resist sharing:
Classic children’s cartoon characters The Smurfs are heading to the big screen for their 50th anniversary.
Studios Columbia and Sony have scooped the film rights to the original 1958 Belgian comic book series - which later became a [...]

Jerry O’Connell’s 1987 Frosted Flakes Commercial

Anyone who’s seen Stand By Me knows what little Jerry O’Connell looked like:

That movie came out in 1986, and just a year later he was lookin’ good in this Frosted Flakes commercial wherein cereal pusher Tony the Tiger gave the then-loser some of the stuff so he could win his bobsled race. Nowadays he’d probably [...]

Potato Head Kids

Everyone knows about Mr. Potato Head and his wife Mrs. Potato Head. But did you know that starting in 1986 there were a whole mess of Potato Head Kids with their own cartoon and toys?

Above are Buster, Peeler, Potato Dumpling, and Capt’n Kid, which are all that remain of my Kids. At one time I [...]

Care Bears “Care-A-Lot Kids” Contest

This ad was published in several different comic books in 1985 (maybe some magazines, too?) to promote a contest sponsored by the Care Bears (or, more corporately, American Greetings) and Woman’s Day magazine. As you can see, the contest’s purpose was to reward the most “caring-est” kids. Pretty nice, I must say. And kinda fitting [...]

Well, that was answered in The Phantom Menace, wasn’t it? I would probably be a worrywart too if I had to “grow up” with crazy [...]

Nintendo Power: The Ultimate One-Up!

Before the Internet, magazines like Nintendo Power were pretty much the only way to get secret codes and “cheats” for video games on the NES. This ad for the publication was inserted into NES games and included this now well-known tip for Super Mario Bros. 3.

McDonald’s Muppet Babies Toys Commercial

Back in 1987, McDonald’s gave away these Muppet Babies toys in Happy Meals. You could get Kermit on a skateboard, Miss Piggy in a pink car, Fozzie on a rocking horse, or Gonzo on a tricycle. Apparently, in Canada there was also an Animal in a red wagon.
Because of their shapes, Kermit & Fozzie and [...]
